Parameter introduction of masks of different standards (KN95, N95, FFP)

2020 04/09

For new pneumonia, there are 2 types of masks that are commonly used
1. Respiratory protective masks, focusing on the filtering of smog or bacteria, as shown below

The parameters of the mask are mainly
Particle filtration efficiency (PFE): the larger the value, the better
Since there are still many detailed parameters of the standard, for popular science, only a simple comparison is made here.
Respiratory protective masks-American standard NOISH:
N90: PFE> = 90%
N95: PFE> = 95%
Respiratory protective masks-European standard EN149:
FFP1: PFE> = 80%
FFP2: PFE> = 94%
FFP3: PFE> = 99%
Respiratory protective masks-Chinese standard GB2626-2006:
KN90: PFE> = 90%
KN95: PFE> = 95%
In summary, in order to fully defend against viruses, the higher the index, the better. If you ca n`t buy it, lower the level, it is still far stronger than cloth masks.

Surgical masks, focusing on the protection of liquid penetration, to prevent saliva or blood splash, as shown below:
4

The parameters of the mask are mainly
Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE): the larger the value, the better
Particle filtration efficiency (PFE): the larger the value, the better
Note 1: Micro particles are usually smaller than bacteria; therefore, PFE protection indicators are more meaningful to the public;
Note 2: For non-medical personnel, the lateral penetration ability exceeds the actual use. Expose a few drops of water on the outside to make a simple judgment.
Since there are still many detailed parameters of the standard, for popular science, only a simple comparison is made here.
Surgical masks-American standard ASTM F2100:
LEVEL1: BFE> = 95%, PFE> = 95%
LEVEL2: BFE> = 98%, PFE> = 98%
LEVEL3: Same as LEVEL2, other indicators are better
Surgical masks-European standard EN14683:
TYPE l: BFE> = 95%, no requirement for PFE
TYPE ll: BFE> = 98%, no requirement for PFE
TYPE llR: Same as TYPE ll, other indicators are better
Surgical masks-Chinese standards:
YY0469-2011: BFE> = 95%, PFE> = 30%
GB19083-2010 Level 1: PFE> = 95%
GB19083-2010 Level 2: PFE> = 99%
GB19083-2010 Level 3: PFE> = 99.97%
In summary, for surgical masks, priority is given to Chinese standard GB19083-2010, American standard ASTM F2100, followed by Chinese standard YY046, European standard EN14683
Due to the anti-blood and body fluid penetration indicators of surgical masks, which are more meaningful to clinicians, and respiratory protective masks (N95, KN95, EN49, etc.) have better sealing for human faces. Respiratory protective masks are recommended. .
